Context
I was invited to design the flyer for the Canadian and U.S. screenings of the documentary, ‘My Rembetika Blues.’ by Greek filmmaker Mary Zournazi, which was being screened as part of the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival and the Vancouver Greek Film Festival in late 2022.
The bouzouki, a long-necked Greek lute, is central to rembetika music, so I decided to make it central to the flyer. Bouzouki, like a lot of stringed instruments, often have intricate inlays on the front of the instrument, which I tried to capture in my illustration. I have the instrument emerging from the sea, representing one of the origins of modern rembetiko music, which was among the Pontic refugees who settled in Attica after 1922 ‘catastrophe.”
